Heavy Cruisers

The Alaska class heavy criusers were conceived of as cruiser-killers at a time when solitary surface raiders were thought to represent the greatest threat to U.S. Navy task forces. But the two which were completed served most of their short active careers in the bombardment role. The maximum range of their 12-inch/50-caliber primary rifles was second only to the Iowa-class battleships' 16/50s, hurling a 1140-pound shell over 38,000 yards.
