The mothballed nuclear-powered merchantman N.S. Savannah rests tied up at the Vane Brothers' Shipyard at Baltimore's Canton Marine Terminal on May 20, 2009. A National Historic Landmark, the Savannah entered Colonna's Shipyard in Norfolk in August 2006 under a $995,000 MARAD contract for "topside work...exterior structural and lighting systems repairs and remediation of water-damaged interior spaces." She arrived at Baltimore under tow on May 8, 2008, where she is expected to remain for up to three years while Vane Brothers removes the remnants of the vessel's reactor under a $558,000 MARAD contract.
